There’s a second group in town aimed at preserving one of San Juan Capistrano’s favorite things – its history.

Once a loose-knit group of longtime residents from historical families, the group has banded together as the Capistrano Historical Alliance Committee. Many are members of the Juaneno Band of Mission Indians, also known as Acjachemen.

The city already has the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society, but the alliance says it’s not trying to step on anyone’s toes.

“While the Historical Society is a wonderful organization, the Capistrano Historical Alliance Committee is mostly composed of members who descend from families with historic ties to San Juan Capistrano, some linked to pre-mission,” alliance spokeswoman Janice Pickartz said. “Because of those ties, there is a personal commitment to preserving the historical elements that remain.”
